In the foreground are railway lines and wagons of the General Terminus & Glasgow Harbour Railway, which ran through the area occupied by the works.

The Glasgow Gas Light Co built the Tradeston Gas Works in 1835 to supply the south side of the city. The works came under municipal control in 1869, and the Town Council's Gas Department immediately began a programme of rebuilding and re-equipment. This was repeated in the years following the Second World War. The works closed in 1970.

The gas works was the scene of one of Glasgow's rare bomb outrages. On the night of 20 January, 1883, two loud explosions were heard at the works and sheets of flame were seen issuing from a large gasometer, which then collapsed. The force of the explosion was felt several miles away, and adjacent properties were damaged when the flames spread to them. After a painstaking police investigation, a number of arrests were made and nine men were eventually jailed. They were found to be members of the Ribbon Society, an offshoot of the Fenian Brotherhood in Dublin that was a forerunner of the Irish Republican Army.

The future development planed for Tradeston

www.glasgowarchitecture.co.uk/tradeston.htm

Postcard From Tradeston

Hi all,

I have been away on this Residency in Aberdeenshire and I got home tonight and got this from Jenny, Headley and Laura. I thought you all might want to have a look.

What about under the Bridge as a stop for a cabin? VERY loud and quite isolated. Not many people but near the co-op building.

By personal favourite for the location of the cabin would be by all the railway arches before the bridge to cross the Clyde. It could be a chance to connect with the local communities of traders that work from the railway arches. What really appealed to me was a sign above the arches on the railway track saying, 'WELCOME TO GLASGOW QUEEN STREET' . It is a street that is blocked off at the end with a bus top and a fast food burger van. Many people on foot. Also you can see into Tradeston and across the river into the City Centre.

What do you think?

Charlie

Why blog?

We are interested in what kind of information network can be formed from your collated research and varying approaches. Does this lead to insensitivity to a site’s history and community?

With The bridge plans on the cards could the cabin be placed as close to the path of the proposed bridge as possible? The Glasgow Sailing Centre is going to close and relocate, as the bridge is to connect to the south side on that land. On the recce I remember that there were interesting conversations about this topic. Maybe we could put the cabin in the sailing centre’s car park?

Cabins are subtle signposts of change, regeneration or repair. Which is a nice connection to this building of the new bridge.
By February is the bridge going to be in early stages of building work?
If so on that corner of the road that at that point in February could well be closed off, but it is a busy corner as lots of passing traffic, granted fast moving if the road is still open.

Any other ideas on locations for the cabin?

If you want to post your thoughts e-mail cabinexchange@yahoo.com and we will send you the route to get blogging.

FOR ALL THAT MISSED OUT -
Here is a text which tells all about:

RECCE DAY 2 - TRADESTON

As day one, we all meet at the lions. Coffee is in order today. The group contains: –

Charlie B
Beth
Nick
Morris
Me
Hedley
Laura
Megan
And others * Please add your name to the list by emailing us. Sorry for not remembering!!

We set off towards Tradeston – down Buchanon Street heading south. We cross the river at Jamaica Street Bridge, and stop to look at the old railway bridge pillars. The Greek inscriptions by Ian Hamilton Finley c.1990. : ALL GREATNESS / STANDS FIRM IN /THE STORM are edited in their translation - most symbolically, the word ‘precarious’ has been taken out. Shall we, like Johnny Rodgers suggests, take these pillars to be an emblematic gateway into an area of Glasgow which has had such a precarious history… The original Merchants city – a place for trade, storage and for lepers. Residential homes for the poor and for the engineers of the paint and textile industries. There has always been great commercial pressure on this area, and firstly with the canal, then the railway and now the motorway, Tradeston has always been locked tightly into itself, pinned into a rough one mile squared. So now we enter from the north, our eyes casting over it’s worn out warehouses, and the weather alone precarious, encourages us to find our base camp. A place where we can explore from, and funnily enough, we have a strange predicament before we even begin. Should we tell anybody that we’re artists? Would these people, working out here, appreciate a band of intrepid explorers? Should we do something to ease the exchange?

We make our way to a street where we find some scrappy wasteland, bordered on one side by a car park + attendant (who spends his time taking pot shots at the rats with his rifle) and a car valet business owned by Slyvester. After an explanation of our intentions, Sly invites us to pitch up in a corner of his plot. Handy for us, the ground is better, and the conversation is significantly improved by the removal of large fence.

We quickly get to work and erect Tim’s polythene friend, this time repairs on the hole are fixed up with yellow tape, adding a certain ‘je ne sais qua’ to the over all beauty and strength of what I feel confident in describing today as a wonderful marquee.

After this amusing erection, we decide on our actions for the day… The brief for this morning’s recce is to undertake some kind of trade or transaction with the locals. Swapping a skill, or some of our time with the businesses around. Establishing the idea of a barter or trade off with anyone willing.

I have the idea of trading a song with a Cormorant Bird. I have often seen them sitting on posts, just off the riverside. Big beautiful, sad looking birds. I wonder what they have to say.
We break up into small groups and head off in various directions for a while before lunch.
Back at the car wash for lunch – and an array of business transactions have taken place.
* See stills.
Beth barters with Sly and his colleagues. After sweeping and cleaning out the inside of a lorry, her dirty bike gets a good sudd and hose down.
Elsewhere, Nick and Charlie have been having fun in the army surplus store. Nick has exchanged his clever foot into the modelling industry, for the promise of an Internet promotion of the family business.

Hedley, Laura and myself take a walk and talk along the river. I feel we miss a few opportunities along the way. It seems we are all too shy this morning… (that includes the people we meet…) We do manage to salvage a curtain pelmet, and offer to jazz up a guys scaffolding, for a photo opp. We also exchange waves and calls over the Clyde. We didn’t get to the birds. They were a lot farther away than I had remembered.
We sent cabin exchange a postcard from the bridge, and traded stories with each other, until our return to base camp, picking up a rather large and useful roll of silver insulation foam en route.
Back to camp, and we divulge our stories, over sandwiches. Lunch eaten, we take a leisurely walk around the area, via the army surplus shop. There seems to be a good number of possible cabin sites in this area. Plenty of car parks, and a number of no-through roads, make this a ripe picking ground. Charlie is particularly keen on the road, which runs parallel to the railway line, with the sign overhead on the railway line, which welcomes train passengers to Glasgow. Would one ever know the importance of Tradeston, if one only saw it from the lofty heights of the train carriage??

The arches under this bridge are filled with individual shop units, creating a lively street, comparatively so, to some of the other streets, which seem more like thoroughfares for cars, or contain larger warehouse cash and carry wholesales. We shelter in the bus stop at the end of the street, which is also a no-through way. Smells from the burger van, waft our way, as we discuss ideas and sites so far…This is a good site, although would the two public houses across the way, provide a cabin audience of the lubricated type? We head back into Tradeston. We continue to explore the perimeters of the area, along the Clyde. Wonderful views, but absolutely no way would the council permit us to use this unstable battleground! We walk round under the Kingston Bridge, a noisy, abstract, but potentially interesting location for cabin? Towards the doors of the House of Sher. Perhaps the most exciting and welcoming of all the Cash and Carry’s in the area. This one has something of a theme park feel to it. We even have to leave coats and large objects at the door.
After leaving C & C heaven we rush back to the car park. Sly is ready to close up for the night. We thank him profusely for not locking our bikes and tent up, and armed with bundles of his flyers for delivery round the toon, our last exchange of the day, we head to the pub, for well earned pints of beer.

Well, this has been a great day! Good connections have been established with some of the businesses, and equally as important; with each other.
With scrappy docks, sidling next to brand new yachts, this area is now looking towards a new future, where designer luxury flats oversee the river, and squash in amongst mishmash of old and historic designs, speedy highways and byways. This notion of integration, old and new, transformation, with business at the heart of it all, could perhaps be a possible beginning for my research. So much lies here, so much gets done, and all so condensed. Yet, this place has streets, which feel like a ghost town, with whispers and winds banging at side doors. Business behind closed doors. Turn a corner, however, and the buses will take off your hats, and there is life once again.
All of this in an area so close to the city centre, but rarely visited for pleasure. And defiantly never for Art. This indeed is a cracker of a location for a cabin exchange project!!!

<<NEWS FLASH>> - Slyvester and team have been hired to clean the living room carpet of my home, hopefully to abolish the stains of 2005. Watch this space for before and after documentation!!!

Jennifer Herman.
